轉化生長因子β(transforming growth factor)家族由一類結構、功能相關的多肽生長因子 亞家族組成，其中包括TGF-β、活化素(activin)、骨形態發生蛋白(BMP)、生長分化因子( GDF)等。TGF-β除了影響細胞的增殖、分化，還在胚胎發育、胞外基質形成、 骨的形成和重建等方面起著重要作用。TGF-β家族成員廣泛存在于從果蠅到人多種生物的 各種組織中，對正常細胞、癌變細胞都有著顯著作用。

Bone morphogenetic protein 2 or BMP-2 belongs to the TGF-β superfamily of proteins.

BMP-2 like other bone morphogenetic proteins,plays an important role in the development of bone and cartilage. It is involved in the hedgehog pathway, TGF beta signaling pathway, and in cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction. It is involved also in cardiac cell differentiation and epithelial to mesenchymal transition.

BMP-2 and BMP-7 are osteoinductive BMPs: they have been demonstrated to potently induce osteoblast differentiation in a variety of cell types.
